Last week I shared a recap of 2017, a year that was really epic for me, and now I want to share my intentions for 2018. I say intentions rather than goals because I think goals can be a bit constraining. Intentions give you the flexibility to respond to the world around you without feeling like a failure and to allow yourself to work a little more holistically.
Practice radical honesty
A couple of days ago I shared a post on Instagram where I talked about radical honesty and social media. It’s really important to me that I am honest and open about my life, the good and the bad, the highs and the lows. For me that honesty is an essential part of being a community. Over 2017 I made a real effort to be open about my life, and it’s my intention to continue this into 2018. If I’ve learnt anything in the last 12 months it’s that being open has amazing rewards and that we should never shy away from vulnerability and radical honesty.
Create genuine blog content I am proud of
In 2017 I really got my blogging mojo back, and I have been loving every moment of it! I am so satisfied with the content I’ve created and I want to continue to deliver innovative, interesting and engaging content as we move into 2018. I love the connections I’ve developed through blogging and how sharing stories opens up conversations, it’s magic. I cannot wait to see how A Pretty Place To Play develops over the next year!
Keep on podcasting
Starting The Mental Health Podcast was such a leap of faith, it’s scary putting yourself out there like that, but it has paid off massively. I love how the podcast has enabled me to connect with more people about issues that I am passionate about, to share stories and to build a community. It’s also responsible for Lau and I’s relationship – we knew each other before we started working together, but now we’re friends who can talk about anything.
Make running adventures a priority
Oh so this is the big one, and if I was going to band around the word goal it would probably be here. My intention for 2018 is to get stronger and more efficient so that I can run further. Specifically so that I can run from London to Brighton next September. I’ll be revealing more about this project over the coming months (including how you can get involved too!), but I am so excited for this challenge! If you know me off line you’ll know I’ve been working with Chevy Rough for the last few months, essentially laying the foundations for my biggest challenge yet. It’s been pretty eye opening, and I really appreciate being able to work with a coach who I respect and shares my values, so it’s a good thing that Chevy is on board to help me get myself in gear to for what I’ve nicknamed ‘The Big Dumb Run’.
Make the choices that are right for me
I announced a few months ago that I’d be running Brighton Half Marathon (you can read my review of the last time I raced it here) and Edinburgh Marathon in 2018. Well plans have changed a little and I’ll only be racing in Edinburgh this year. After a lot of thought and reflection I decided to pull out of Brighton Half and spend the time focusing on my running form and strength as, in the long term, it’s a better investment for me. This is why I have intentions, so that I can flex and change to what I need!
As I’ve written this I’ve realised that almost everything links back to a bigger them – community. It’s so important to me to connect with people, to share stories and to be part of something bigger, and I cannot wait to see where that takes me in 2018.
What are your intentions for the coming year?
