London Zoo Lates

For the last few years Zoo Lates at London Zoo has been the quirky night out of choice for London's party animals (sorry, I couldn't resist), and last Friday night I finally got in on the action.

Every Friday night in the summer, London Zoo opens after hours inviting hundreds of grown up visitors to play the ultimate urban jungle. This is no ordinary trip to the zoo - the huge programme boasts animal talks, improvised comedy, cabaret, roving performances, bars, a street food festival, music, a beautiful carousel, a short film festival, oh and around 17,500 animals to gaze at in wonder!

London Zoo is in the most amazing location, smack bang in the middle of the city in Regent's Park (one of my favourite London parks). It is a really special place and an iconic London landmark. It is the stuff of every London childhood, including my own. Zoos hold such fond memories for me, so it was so exciting to be going back after so many years. What was even more exciting was that this was DT's first trip to the zoo ever!

It was a beautiful evening and with partygoers out in force the event had a real festival vibe to it, only enhanced by a Pimms cup and hog roast sandwich!

I have to admit that I found elements of the event a little overwhelming. There was so much to see and do, as well as navigating around the animal's bed times, I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked! If you do go I would suggest putting in some serious research before hand and developing an action plan with the help of this handy planning guide.

Even though I didn't see as much as I would have liked, I did get to see some amazing animals - the lions were so beautiful, and it was nice to be able to get some good shots to make up for loosing all the pictures I took on safari a few years ago (it hurts to write that). I also loved the penguins - who were a major draw on the night! These little guys are so charismatic and cool, they are fantastic models!

Unfortunately, I had an epic fail and forgot to charge my camera, so I can't show you as much of the night as I would have liked! However, if you are looking to do something a little bit different on a Friday night I would recommend a trip to the zoo, so you can see it all for yourself (and I can be envious that you remembered to charge your camera!).
