Last weekend, when strolling through Primrose Hill with Sophie, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Donostia Social Club - a food van; pop up restaurant; and tapas pintxos bar all in one. It was the perfect place to pull up a stool and take a break on a beautiful afternoon!
Donostia specialises in food from the beautiful Basque region (Donostia is the Basque name of the city San Sebastian), something that really excited me! When I was growing up my family took several holidays to the Basque region (mostly in Hendaye and San Jean de Luz, but I do remember day trips to San Sebastian and Bilbao) and I can remember the amazing food that we ate! In particular lots of cold meats and cheeses, eating mussels nearly every night and delicious apple tarts (I can recall my Dad being particularly enthusiastic about those!). So as you can imagine, Donostia's menu had a lot of appeal!
After some delicious sherry and olives to get me started, I opted for the meat and cheese plate. For a mere five pounds I was presented with a plate piled high with several different cold meats, cheeses and delicious breads - you could say that I was impressed! Sophie opted for Iberico pork cheeks, and given the speed at which it was wolfed down (albeit in a very ladylike way!) I think that she liked it!
Donostia will be popping up all over London this summer as well as maintaining a regular spot at Tanner Street Market on a Saturday, and they are definitely worth checking out!
